How to thin paint for oil painting – video lesson, summary:
1. There are many recipes on how to thin paint and I suggest one of them here.
2. You need to mix one of the following:
– 5 parts pinene (or turpentine) and 1 part Dammar varnish (or Mastic Varnish, but it’s more expensive)
– 3 parts pinene (or turpentine) and 1 part Dammar varnish (or Mastic Varnish)
– 4 parts pinene (or turpentine) and 1 part Dammar varnish (or Mastic Varnish)
The result will vary by viscosity, fluidity and transparency. Choose the one which you like most.
3. With this mix you can thin the paint up to the state close to a watercolor
4. You can erase parts of the painting thinned by this mix with the help of the same mix, or Retouch Varnish, or another thinner, even after the paint is dry.
5. The paint dries fast with this mix, so it’s comfortable to work with it.
